Windows 11 26H2 will be a small update for 24H2 and 25H2 PCs
26H1 uses a different Windows core.
Microsoft has confirmed Windows 11 version 26H2, the next annual update for Windows 11. The release is already available to Windows Insiders through the Experimental channel, with wider testing planned later through Release Preview.
For most existing Windows 11 systems, this will not be a full OS upgrade. Microsoft says Windows 11 26H2 shares the same servicing branch as Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. This means supported devices on those versions will receive 26H2 as a small enablement package.

Microsoft says this update path should be closer to a monthly update than a full system replacement. The company lists a small installation size, lower deployment disruption and no need for full reimaging as the expected benefits for organizations. Devices running Windows 11 26H1 will not be able to update to version 26H2. According to the company, 26H1 is based on a different Windows core than 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2.

This confirms that 26H1 remains a separate branch for select new silicon. Microsoft previously said Windows 11 26H1 would only be available on new devices with select hardware coming to market in early 2026. At the time, the company confirmed the release for Snapdragon X2 systems, while there was still no mention of NVIDIA N1.
