Active shooter alert issued in Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges; 1 cop dead, another officer and civilian injured

An active shooter alert was issued Monday morning in Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges borough as police ask people to avoid the area. Residents are asked to shelter in place and stay away from the windows.

Montreal police (SPVM) said that one of its officers died after being shot during an operation near Trans Island & De Courtrai Avenues.

At 1:22 p.m. SPVM said that a suspect was neutralized and two police officers and one civilian were injured in the incident.

Police have blocked off a residential street in the Côte-des-Neiges district. “We’re asking everyone to avoid the sector. The situation is not under control,” SPVM spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant said.

CityNews crew near the scene saw a heavy police presence with dozens of cruisers on Décarie Boulevard.

CityNews spoke to witnesses in the area who recalled hearing repeated gunshots and saw multiple gunmen firing from between two buildings.

Jacob Coutu, who was electrical work nearby, said, “I saw the gunfight and we see the police going down. We see the gunman, the hostile gunman coming down, hiding and fighting. You know, he recharges it. He had like a rifle or something. He recharges it and yeah, it was pretty crazy.”

Guests at the Hilton Garden Inn, located near De Courtrai Avenue and Décarie Boulevard, were asked to take cover in a freezer, according to a source staying at the hotel.

Quebec’s Transport Department says it has closed sections of the Décarie expressway and other parts of the highway network in the central part of the city due to the ongoing police operation.

Officials have also closed a local metro station.

Domestic Security Minister Ian Lafrenière said on X, “My thoughts are with the families of the people injured.”
