Microsoft says 8GB RAM is back on the menu: Surface Pro and Surface Laptop get cheaper options without Copilot+
Microsoft is now selling cheaper Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch configurations with 8GB of RAM. The new models lower the entry price to $849 for the Surface Pro and $949 for the Surface Laptop. Both devices still use the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus processor and 256GB of storage.
The change follows earlier Surface price increases . The same devices originally launched with 16GB of RAM at $799 for Surface Pro and $899 for Surface Laptop, but those configurations later moved above $1,000.
The new 8GB versions also lose Copilot+ PC status . Some say that this would be a feature worth paying for, but it’s simply lack of memory. Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC requirement includes at least 16GB of RAM, so these lower-memory models do not ship with the same local AI feature set as the 16GB variants.

Microsoft will continue selling the 16GB models. The 8GB versions appear limited to the smaller Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch models, while the flagship Surface Pro and Surface Laptop lines still start with 16GB of RAM.
Microsoft may call this a cheaper option, but the price is still difficult to justify. The lower entry point comes from cutting memory to 8GB, not from offering better value. At the very least, these models should have matched the original 2025 launch prices of the 16GB configurations. Instead, Microsoft is charging more for systems with half the memory.
