Build your own Steam Machine, if you have AMD GPU
SteamOS image adds AMD discrete GPU support.
Valve has updated its SteamOS installation page with a new beta support entry for AMD discrete GPUs. This means the public SteamOS image is no longer limited to Steam Deck recovery, SteamOS handhelds, and AMD-powered portable systems.
The support list now includes Steam Deck, Lenovo Legion Go S, Lenovo Legion Go, ASUS ROG Ally, ASUS ROG Ally X, other AMD-powered handhelds, and AMD discrete GPUs . The last entry is the important change, as it extends SteamOS beta support to regular desktop PCs with Radeon graphics.

Custom Steam Machines are now official, at least with AMD GPUs
Valve already said SteamOS 3.8 allows users to run the same operating system as Steam Machine on their own living-room PC. The current limitation is GPU support. Valve says AMD GPUs are supported for now, while support for more hardware is planned later.

This follows the SteamOS 3.8 stable release , which already listed i mproved compatibility with recent Intel and AMD platforms . Valve also mentioned better video memory management on systems with discrete GPUs. That work now appears to be reflected in the public installation page.
Intel and NVIDIA support remains a work in progress. Valve has confirmed that it is working with NVIDIA to bring official SteamOS support at some point. This does not mean users have to wait. SteamOS already has alternatives such as CachyOS and Bazzite, both of which are popular Linux distributions with a game-focused approach.
If I don’t get a Steam Machine right away, is there anything else I can do?
Thanks to the openness of the PC platform, there are lots of options for devices that will allow you to run games natively or streamed to your TV. There are many PC sites and communities out there that can help you with that. For our part, we are continuing to work toward enabling SteamOS to be used on more hardware than just ours.
