Valve’s Steam Machine gets an RTX 5060 DIY rival made with a 3D printer

AMD’s Jacob Terkelsen, who works on AI GPU board validation, has shown a Steam Machine-style Mini-ITX PC build with GeForce RTX 5060 graphics

Earlier this week, we looked at desktop PC alternatives to Valve’s Steam Machine. Given the official pricing, it is possible to build a system with similar or better GPU performance in the same price range. The main counterargument is size. Valve’s system uses a compact custom design, which is harder to match with standard PC components. AMD’s Jacob Terkelsen has now shown that it is possible, at least if the builder knows what they are doing.

One of the alternatives comes from Jacob Terkelsen, an AMD engineer working on AI GPUs. This is not an AMD project, but rather a personal small form factor PC build based on a 3D-printed case (in case use of RTX 5060 wasn’t a giveaway).

The system uses a Mini-ITX motherboard and a GeForce RTX 5060 graphics card. It is built around the “SFF Mini ITX Steam Machine Case” by 3DCatt, a 3D-printable design measuring 167 × 168 × 225 mm. The footprint is close to Valve’s system, although the case is deeper to fit standard PC hardware. The 3D print files are available for download .

The build also uses a 400W Flex PSU, which led to the obvious question. NVIDIA lists the GeForce RTX 5060 with 145W total graphics power and 550W required system power. Terkelsen replied: “When you know how things work, recommendations become suggestions.”

This is technically true, depending on the CPU, GPU model, power limits and PSU quality. Vendor PSU ratings usually assume a full system with margin, not a fixed requirement for every configuration. That does not make a 400W PSU a universal recommendation, but it does show why small form factor builders often work outside standards.

A build like this may be difficult to keep below $1,000 if every component must be bought new, since Mini-ITX boards, Flex PSUs and compact cooling can raise the price quickly. It becomes more realistic if the builder already has some parts, buys used hardware, finds local deals or waits for GPU and motherboard promos. Not to mention, the actual 3D printer.
