AMD FSR 4.1 costs up to 14% performance on Radeon RX 7900 XTX versus FSR 3.1

AMD FSR 4.1 tested on Radeon RX 7000, image quality close to RX 9000 with lower performance

ComputerBase has tested AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1 on Radeon RX 7000 graphics cards, following AMD’s early driver release for RDNA 3 GPUs. AMD enabled support through Adrenalin 26.6.2, ahead of the previously announced July window.

The test covers Radeon RX 7900 XTX, RX 7800 XT and RX 7600 cards. The outlet compared FSR 4.1 on RDNA 3 with FSR 3.1 and FSR 4.1 on RDNA 4. AMD’s official implementation for RDNA 3 uses INT8, while RDNA 4 uses FP8.

ComputerBase says the final INT8 version is much better than last year’s leaked build, which still had visible rendering issues. The outlet writes that RX 7000 received “a major quality boost” with FSR 4.1. It also adds that “FSR 4.1 costs performance on RDNA 3,” which is the main trade-off compared with FSR 3.1.

FSR 4.1 Performance on RDNA3 GPUs

In the nine-game average, Radeon RX 7900 XTX gained 40% with FSR 4.1 Quality and 73% with FSR 4.1 Performance at 4K. With FSR 3.1, the same card gained 57% and 103%. This makes FSR 4.1 around 11% slower than FSR 3.1 in Quality mode and 14% slower in Performance mode.

The gap is smaller on lower-tier RDNA 3 cards. Radeon RX 7800 XT at 1440p and Radeon RX 7600 at 1080p were both 7% slower than FSR 3.1 in Quality mode and 9% slower in Performance mode. ComputerBase still concludes that the quality gain is worth the performance cost, because FSR 4.1 Balanced can roughly match FSR 3.1 Quality performance while offering better image quality.
