ShadPS4 adds ShadNet online support, but PS4 emulation still has a long road ahead

ShadPS4 is not in the same position as RPCS3 yet. The PS4 emulator is a newer project, with development reportedly starting in October 2022 and early public builds appearing in 2023. Game playability is also much lower, so it will still take a lot of work from developers and the community before many PS4 titles run correctly.
ShadNet brings custom online servers to ShadPS4
The emulator has still made visible progress over the past year. Bloodborne, Red Dead Redemption, Dark Souls Remastered and several other titles can now run through ShadPS4, but the project itself still warns that users should not expect a flawless experience. Its own quickstart guide also notes that many games do not work, while playable games can still have emulation issues.
The ShadPS4 team has now announced ShadNet, a custom online server system for the emulator. The feature is designed to let ShadPS4 users connect and play online games together without using Sony’s PlayStation Network.
We are excited to officially announce shadNet. ShadNet is going to offer shadPS4 users a way to connect, and play online games together. This project has been in the works for a few months now, but its in a stage where we can announce it officially. ShadNet is still in development, and there is still a lot to be done, but its ready for testing. At this moment, only tracking score works, but please feel free to give it a try!
According to the developers, ShadNet has been in development for several months and is now ready for testing. The implementation is still limited. At this stage, only score tracking works, while account details cannot yet be entered through shadQtLauncher.
PS4 emulation is still behind RPCS3
The project is based on RPCN, the custom server system used by RPCS3. This makes the direction clear, but it also shows how early the feature is. RPCS3 has had more than a decade of development and now lists thousands of PS3 titles in its compatibility database, including more than 2,500 marked as playable. Currently playable titles are at 15.1% out of 1938 known titles.

ShadNet follows the release of ShadPS4 v0.16.0, which the team described as its largest update so far. That release added local multiplayer support, a new configuration system, early camera emulation, an OpenAL audio backend, Big Picture Mode and more work on the HTTP subsystem.
The online work does not mean ShadPS4 is ready for broad PS4 multiplayer support. For now, it is another early feature in a project that is still focused on compatibility, graphics accuracy, audio, input handling and stability. It is also separate from Sony’s servers, so users should not expect PSN or PlayStation Plus integration.
