GTA 6 physical media plans reportedly end with code-in-box release
Grand Theft Auto VI may not receive a disc release at launch or later, according to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter. The game will still be available in a boxed retail version, but that package will reportedly include only a download code.
Rockstar opened pre-orders for GTA 6 this week, confirming Standard and Ultimate editions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, with preloading expected to begin one week earlier.
Code in a box remains the retail option
The confusion started after a Rockstar Support email told a user that they would be able to acquire a “physical copy” in the following months. THR reports that the email was authentic, but the wording was being misread.

No current plan for discs
According to a source with knowledge of Rockstar’s plans, “physical copy” refers to the boxed version with a download code inside. The “following months” part reportedly refers to the period after this week’s price and edition announcements, not the months after launch.
The language is being misinterpreted by a hopeful internet, a source with knowledge of the plans told THR. At this point in time, there are no plans for Grand Theft Auto VI discs to be printed — not at launch, and not months after. The email’s use of the phrase “physical copy” there refers to the same “physical version” (the code in a case) announced on Wednesday, and its “the following months” language is a clunky reference to the months following Wednesday’s announcement, the source said, and not the months following the Nov. 19, 2026 release. The same source claims there are no current plans to print GTA 6 discs, either for launch or for a later retail release. This means buyers who choose the boxed version would still need to redeem the included code and download the game from a console storefront.
For consoles, this could become one of the strongest pushes yet toward digital-only hardware, given GTA 6’s influence across the gaming market. A code-in-box release still keeps retailers involved, but it removes the main reason to buy a boxed copy.
For PC, this does not change much for now. Rockstar has not announced a desktop version yet, and most modern PCs no longer include DVD drives, not to mention Blu-ray. A DVD release would also be quote foolish for a game of this size, as installation would likely require dozens of discs and take hours.
