Ubuntu Linux maker Canonical continues making more inroads in the Rust infrastructure space. Canonical announced today they have become the first gold sponsor of the Trifecta Tech Foundation that works on projects like sudo-rs for building more open infrastructure in the Rust programming language.

Canonical already has supported the Trifecta Tech Foundation with initiatives like the Rust version of sudo while now they have become a gold sponsor with a €40,000/year contribution to help create and maintain more memory-safe system utilities in Rust.

Canonical and Trifecta Tech will next be focusing on ntpd-rs as the Rust version for time synchronization client and server in Ubuntu. The plan is to use ntpd-rs for testing in Ubuntu 26.10 and make it the default in Ubuntu 27.04.
