令我謙卑的書

我們系內的讀書小組選讀的大多是新近出版的哲學書，例如上學期便讀了 Derek Parfit 的 On What Matters Volume One ，即使是讀稍舊的書，也不過是三、四年前出版的。這個學期有點特別，大家同意讀一本出版了十多二十年的書，就是 John McDowell 的 Mind and World ；此書是英美哲學界公認的重要著作，也是公認的極其深奧難懂。

Mind and World 出版時，我在 Berkeley 當研究生還不足兩年， Davidson 開了個 graduate seminar 講授這本書，我去聽足了一個學期，內容已完全忘記了，只記得當時有很強烈的跟不上的感覺。多年後重讀過此書的其中一章，仍然覺得非常難懂，掌握得不多；這次跟幾個同事一起研讀，加上我在這十年八年的進步，應該會了解得深入一點吧！

有些書，我會稱為「令我謙卑的書」， Mind and World 是其一；這些書的深刻內容及作者顯示的能力和創意都令我深感自己的不足，感到不足，自然而然就謙卑了。令我謙卑的書當然包括 Kant 的 Critique of Pure Reason 和 Wittgenstein 的 Philosophical Investigations ，較近的，可舉以下幾本：
