PS5 Disc Drive demand increases

Sony has added a purchase limit for the detachable Disc Drive for PS5 Digital Edition consoles and PS5 Pro. The PlayStation Direct product page now states that “due to high demand, there is a limit of 1 per order.”
The accessory which costs $79 is designed for PS5 Digital Edition consoles and PS5 Pro. It allows users to play supported PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray Disc and also supports 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD movie playback.
The timing follows Sony’s recent confirmation that physical disc production for new PlayStation games will end in January 2028. After that date, newly released games on PlayStation consoles will be sold through PlayStation Store and retailers in digital formats only.

Sony says games already released on disc, or games released before January 2028, will not be affected. The PS Direct page for the Disc Drive now also carries a notice saying discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on supported consoles.
Disc Drive remains required for PS5 Pro physical media
The PS5 Pro ships as a disc-free console. Sony sells the Disc Drive separately for users who want to play physical games or use the console as a Blu-ray player. The company also notes that an internet connection is required to pair the Disc Drive with a PS5 console during setup.
Demand for the detachable drive has increased shortly after Sony confirmed its planned move away from new physical game releases. Quite literally no one liked this idea, given that the PS5 series is already digital with a physical drive option, which is now super popular. But this is something Sony execs could’ve predicted if they actually listened to what gamers want.
