Cyberpunk 2077 reaches 40 million copies sold

Cyberpunk 2077 reaches new sales milestone after Phantom Liberty

Cyberpunk 2077 has now sold 40 million copies worldwide, according to CD Projekt. The figure covers sales of the base game and Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, which includes the Phantom Liberty expansion.

The game reached the milestone on July 3, more than five and a half years after its launch in December 2020. CD Projekt previously confirmed 35 million copies sold in late 2025, which means the game added another 5 million units in the following months.

From troubled launch to long-term seller

Cyberpunk 2077 had one of the most criticized launches in recent game history. The game shipped with bugs and performance issues, while Sony removed it from the PlayStation Store shortly after release and offered refunds to buyers.

CD Projekt later released multiple patches, followed by the 2.0 update and Phantom Liberty expansion in 2023. Those updates changed large parts of the base game and helped rebuild the game’s reception over time.

CD Projekt points to future Cyberpunk projects

CD Projekt Joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski said the 40 million figure shows the long-term strength of Cyberpunk 2077. He also said it creates a base for future projects in the same universe, including Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, which is planned for release this fall.

Game gained path tracing in 2023

The studio is also working on a new Cyberpunk game, although that project is still far from release. For now, Cyberpunk 2077 remains one of CD Projekt’s main long-term sellers, supported by new platforms, bundles and the continued availability of Phantom Liberty.
