Modded GeForce RTX 4080M desktop card tested with 100W gaming power draw
A Chinese reviewer has tested an unofficial desktop graphics card based on the mobile GeForce RTX 4080 GPU.

This isn’t a new product. In fact, we covered it over two years ago. The card is sold as “RTX 4080M,” but it is not an NVIDIA retail product. It is something that we call a Frankenstein card that uses laptop GPU silicon on a custom desktop PCIe board. These cards are sold without official warranty or standard NVIDIA driver support.
According to the reviewer, the tested unit was purchased for 2,000 RMB, around $300. Similar cards are now said to cost 2,700 to 2,800 RMB, around $400. At that price, it competes with new graphics cards such as the Radeon RX 9070 GRE and GeForce RTX 5060 Ti in China. For context, the RX 9070 GRE currently costs 3,600 to 4000 RMB.

Tested With Arrow Lake Refresh
The test system used an Intel Core Ultra 270K Plus processor, a Maxsun Z890-A motherboard and 32GB of DDR5-8200 memory. In 3DMark Time Spy, the RTX 4080M card scored 18,600 points. Another user reportedly shared a result of around 19,500 points with a similar card.
The more interesting result is power consumption. The card reportedly drew around 100W during testing, which is well below the maximum 175W configuration available for the mobile GeForce RTX 4080. This may be caused by the custom BIOS, power limits or driver setup.

In games, the card was compared with Radeon RX 9070 GRE, since both GPUs have 12GB memory. The RTX 4080M was faster in PUBG at 1440p Ultra, where it reached more than 340 FPS compared to around 240 FPS on RX 9070 GRE. It also held a small lead in Delta Force at 4K Ultra.

The result changed in other games. In Forza Horizon 5 at 1440p Low, the RTX 4080M reached 214 FPS, while the RX 9070 GRE reached 297 FPS. In Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K High, the modified NVIDIA card reached 49 FPS, compared to 76 FPS for the Radeon card.
In short, RTX 4080M is around 22% to 30% cheaper than RX 9070 GRE, but around 6% slower on average across the tested games, or around 17% slower if counting only the AAA titles where Radeon performs better. Seems like an interesting solution, especially given the power consumption. AMD definitely could have priced the 9070 GRE better.
