Steam Machine red LED issue fixed after CMOS reset
Redditor “me_hill” previously reported that a new Steam Machine stopped working after around 20 minutes of use. The system showed a red LED error pattern, which Valve’s support page identifies as a GPU failure when the right half of the light bar breathes red and the indicator LED stays solid red.
The user later updated the post and said the system booted normally after being left unplugged overnight. Earlier attempts after 30 minutes and after a few hours did not work. The system recovered before the user tried any BIOS recovery steps.

Valve explains what the error actualy means, it’s not GPU failure
Valve support later replied to another affected user with a recovery procedure. The steps include unplugging the Steam Machine, pressing the power button a few times to discharge the PSU, plugging it back in, then holding the power button for around six seconds until the LED flashes.
When the LED begins cycling recovery color codes, Valve says users should press the power button when the LED turns green. This performs a full CMOS reset. Valve says the next boot should show a blue RGB bar and may take longer due to memory retraining.

Valve’s SteamHWFeedback account said the issue likely happened after or during a BIOS update. The account also said the front panel code is flipped horizontally out of the box due to a miscommunication. Affected users are still advised to contact Steam Support and provide a ticket ID if the procedure works or if the system remains stuck.
