Sony disc backlash grows as PlayStation Plus users report cancellation discounts
Sony is facing a wider backlash after confirming that physical disc production for new PlayStation games will end in January 2028. After that date, new PlayStation games will be sold through the PlayStation Store and through retailers in digital formats only.
The decision has already led to the Don’t Kill the Disc petition. According to Insider Gaming, the campaign reached 100,000 signatures in four days and has since grown to almost 200,000 signatures. The petition was started after Sony’s announcement by a representative of Canadian retailer PnP Games.

The petition focuses on ownership, resale, lending, collecting and preservation. It argues that a physical disc gives players options that a digital license does not. The campaign also says it is not against digital distribution as a choice, but against removing physical releases for new PlayStation games.
Gamers are clearly not happy. The backlash is now being tied to PlayStation Plus cancellations. Several users claim that Sony is offering discounts when they try to cancel a PS Plus subscription. A user was offered 50% off another three months, while other users reportedly saw 25%, 33% or 50% offers.

However, Sony has not announced a public retention campaign tied to the disc decision, and it is not clear whether these offers are global, targeted by account, or part of an existing cancellation flow.
One thing is clear, Sony shows no sign of reverting its decision. The company has again started posting on social media after a few days of silence.
