VESA introduces DisplayHDR True Black 1400 with 1400 nits peak for OLED

VESA has announced a new top-tier certification called DisplayHDR True Black 1400. The new standard targets OLED panels used for professional HDR workflows and premium content consumption. It raises both peak and sustained brightness requirements compared to previous True Black tiers.
The specification requires at least 1400 cd/m² peak luminance and 700 cd/m² full-screen brightness. Black levels must remain as low as 0.0005 cd/m². This keeps OLED’s contrast advantage while pushing higher sustained brightness, which has been a key limitation of earlier panels.
VESA says the new tier builds on its DisplayHDR CTS 1.2 testing framework. This includes stricter validation for color accuracy, contrast, and black-level performance. The goal is to standardize higher-end OLED performance for HDR grading, content review, and use in brighter environments.

The first certified products will be shown at Bilibili World 2026 in Shanghai on July 10–12. According to Lenovo, the Yoga Pro 16 will be the first notebook to meet this certification, with a panel rated at 1400 nits peak brightness. Samsung Display also confirmed it will showcase tandem OLED panels designed to meet the new tier.
VESA positions DisplayHDR True Black 1400 as a response to recent OLED improvements such as tandem structures. These designs allow higher brightness without compromising black levels, enabling OLED panels to move further into professional HDR use cases.
