Nintendo display engineer job lists VRR support for current and future consoles

Switch 2 still lacks VRR support in TV mode

Nintendo hires display engineer with VRR experience for current and future consoles.

Nintendo Technology Development is hiring a senior display engineer to work on display technology for current and future gaming hardware. The role involves designing display drivers and ensuring compatibility with standards including HDMI, DisplayPort, DSI and EDID.

Nintendo lists knowledge of HDR and Variable Refresh Rate as a preferred qualification. The engineer would also research display features that could be deployed across gaming consoles used by a large audience.

The listing has attracted attention because Nintendo Switch 2 still does not support VRR when connected to a TV. Nintendo’s current documentation states that VRR is limited to handheld and tabletop modes. The console supports HDR10 and up to 120 Hz output at 1080p or 1440p, but VRR is absent from its TV mode specifications.

Company teased VRR support

Nintendo originally mentioned VRR support for compatible TVs before removing the claim. The company later confirmed that the feature only works with the console’s integrated display. Testing by The Verge showed that the Switch 2 dock itself can pass a 4K 120 Hz HDR and VRR signal from other handheld systems, suggesting the dock hardware is capable of supporting it.

The job listing does not confirm that Nintendo plans to add docked VRR to Switch 2. It covers both current and future products, so the work may also apply to later hardware. However, the mention of VRR has renewed speculation that Nintendo could still enable the feature through a system update.
