SharpEmu renders its first PS5 games

Three PlayStation 5 emulators are now receiving updates as developers work toward running commercial games on PCs. The timing is interesting, as PlayStation faces a lot of criticism after its decision to end physical media. Among such games is GTA6, which will not be released on discs initially, perhaps never. This game launches exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. Rockstar has not announced a PC version, which we all know is coming, but some gamers are not going to wait.
But let’s start by saying that even PlayStation 4 emulation is not as broad as PS3. The ShadPS4 project we recently covered only has 15% os PS4 games playable. But for PlayStation 5, the focus is clearly only on GTA 6 right now.
PS5 Emulation on PCs, first steps were already made
SharpEmu looks the most promising because it shows the biggest progress. The new C# emulator can load PS5 executable files, run native CPU instructions, load system modules and provide early shader and video-output support. Its primary development platform is Windows.
Videos shared on X show the 2D platformer Dreaming Sarah running with graphics. The project page confirms real texture rendering for the game. Silent Hill: The Short Message reaches its opening logos and warning screens, while Demon’s Souls Remake can submit its first video frame and enter a video loop. None of these results means that a commercial 3D PS5 game is currently playable.

Kyty is also being mentioned as a second active PS5 emulator. However, the original public Kyty repository is not new, and its last official release dates back to August 2022. Its documentation only confirms support for simple PS4 games and PS5 homebrew, with missing audio, networking and other functions.

RPCSX can boot the PS5 interface
RPCSX takes a broader approach and supports research into both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 software. It can boot PS5 VSH, the console’s safe mode and test samples. Its developers also report working sound and controller input, although launching PS5 games through the system interface remains under development. The emulator currently requires Linux or Windows through WSL.
Therefore, RPCS3 team is not fully correct in saying that there’s no PS5 emulation. It is at its early stages, and some progress was already made, but it’s nothing a casual gamer would be interested in yet.

The current race is therefore about reaching reliable 3D rendering rather than playing Astro Bot, Demon’s Souls or GTA VI. Dreaming Sarah shows that basic commercial PS5 software can already reach rendered gameplay, but larger games still stop during startup or video initialization.
Perhaps with all the AI-tools, developers can accelerate the process, PlayStation 4 was released over a decade ago, and progress has been slow. Fingers crossed some gamers will be able to buy the GTA 6 PS5 version and somehow run it on PCs. After all, the pre-announcement leak did mention it was running on GeForce RTX GPUs…
