Repair technicians access hidden RTX 50 hotspot data with NVIDIA MODS
RTX 5070 Ti reaches the 107°C thermal limit while Windows reports 68°C.

NVIDIA removed access to the GPU hotspot temperature with the GeForce RTX 50 series, but the underlying sensor remains active. Brazilian repair specialists Paulo Gomes and Sidnelson demonstrated that NVIDIA’s internal MODS diagnostic software can still read the value, including temperatures unavailable through GPU-Z, HWiNFO and MSI Afterburner.
The change was confirmed when GeForce RTX 5090 reviews went live in January. GPU-Z developer W1zzard told VideoCardz that NVIDIA had removed hotspot access from its public API. Monitoring programs initially displayed an invalid reading of 255°C. GPU-Z 2.62.0 later stopped showing the field when this value was detected, while retaining hotspot monitoring for RTX 40 cards.
NVIDIA MODS still reads the hidden sensor
MODS, short for Modular Diagnostic Software, is NVIDIA’s proprietary suite for testing GPUs, memory and other board functions. It is intended for internal diagnostics, manufacturing and repair work. NVIDIA does not provide a public download, although unofficial builds have circulated among graphics card repair technicians. Access normally requires a compatible MODS package and test configuration, often running through a bootable Linux environment. In this case, the technicians operated the test platform remotely over SSH.

The tested Gigabyte GeForce RTX 5070 Ti reported an average GPU temperature of around 67°C to 68°C, while MODS showed the hotspot rising above 100°C. “Someone sees 68°C in Windows and thinks the graphics card is running cool, but the hotspot is already reaching 104°C,” the technicians explained. The diagnostic log showed that the hotspot reached NVIDIA’s 107°C thermal limit five times during one test, causing the GPU to reduce its clock speed.

After opening the card, the repair team found dry thermal material and an area of poor contact between the GPU and cooler. Replacing it reduced the hotspot peak from 106°C to 107°C to approximately 100°C, and the temperature portion of the MODS test passed.
The team provided the following explanation.
During our tests with an RTX 5070 Ti, the reported GPU temperature looked completely normal in Windows monitoring software. However, using MODS, we found the Hot Spot reaching 107°C. After replacing the thermal paste, the Hot Spot dropped to around 100°C, confirming a significant improvement in heat transfer.
In our repair lab, we have diagnosed and condemned many different graphics cards due to poorly applied thermal paste or improper contact between the GPU die and the cooler. In many of those cases, the average GPU temperature appeared normal and did not reflect the localized overheating.
We believe NVIDIA should reconsider removing the Hot Spot reading from Windows. If users rely only on the average GPU temperature, they may fail to detect cooling problems in time, which could contribute to premature GPU failures over the coming years.

The result confirms that NVIDIA has restricted software access rather than removing hotspot measurement from RTX 50 hardware. Standard Windows tools still cannot expose the value, leaving MODS and other non-public diagnostic methods as the only known way to read it.
Perhaps with enough pressure, NVIDIA will restore a feature that gives users useful diagnostic data, instead of focusing on collectible cards no one asked for.
