Microsoft paused this week’s console builds while preparing an update described as worth the wait
Microsoft may begin testing its reported Xbox disc-to-digital system through the Xbox Insider program next week. The company paused console update releases this week while preparing the next build.
Xbox Insider lead Brad Rossetti told users that Microsoft was preparing for the following week. He added that the update would be “worth the wait,” but did not reveal which features it would include. Windows Central editor Jez Corden responded with “Positron commeth,” referring to Microsoft’s reported disc conversion project.

Xbox Disc to Digital Service
Positron references appeared in the Xbox PC app. More details later indicated that Microsoft was internally testing a system for Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs. Original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs are reportedly not supported.
The system would grant a digital entitlement after the user inserts and installs a compatible disc while signed into a Microsoft account. The entitlement would remain linked to that specific disc. Selling or lending the disc would transfer digital access to the next account using it, rather than leaving a permanent copy with the previous owner.
Games supporting Xbox Play Anywhere could also become available on PC and compatible handhelds. Cloud access may be offered for supported titles when the account has the required Game Pass subscription. Some older Xbox One discs may not contain the manufacturing data required by the system.
Microsoft has not confirmed that Positron will be part of next week’s update. A related announcement would follow Sony’s controversial decision to stop offering physical media from 2028. Although the two developments are connected, Xbox’s project is designed to preserve support for physical games on current and future consoles. Sony’s decision, on the other hand, likely points to the end of disc support on its next-generation hardware.
Reportedly, Microsoft has not yet made a final decision for Project Helix, its next-generation Xbox. Rumors suggest the company is also considering an all-digital approach.
