Intel unveils Starfire space processor with 8 CPU cores and 4 Xe GPU cores

Intel Starfire space processor features 8 CPU cores, 75 TOPS and 35W TDP

Intel has detailed Starfire, a processor designed for spacecraft and other systems operating in extreme environments. The chip combines CPU, GPU and NPU hardware in a multi-chip Foveros package.

Starfire uses four performance cores and four low-power efficiency cores manufactured on the Intel 18A process. Its three-tile NPU also uses Intel 18A, while the integrated GPU is manufactured on Intel 3 and features four Xe cores with 64 execution units.

Starfire™ is designed for space grade survivability, advanced AI performance while meeting the size, weight and power constraints.

Two configurations with 10W and 35W power limits

The low-power configuration runs the P-cores at 1.0 GHz and the LPE-cores at 850 MHz. Its GPU operates between 800 MHz and 1.0 GHz, while total AI performance reaches up to 45 TOPS within a 10W TDP.

The performance configuration increases P-core frequency to 3.1 GHz and LPE-core frequency to 2.1 GHz. The GPU reaches 2.0 GHz, total performance rises to 75 TOPS and the TDP increases to 35W.

Ready for extreme conditions

Starfire supports LPDDR5 and DDR5 memory alongside 12 PCIe 4.0 lanes. Intel lists an operating junction temperature range of minus 55°C to 125°C and a planned product lifetime of more than 10 years.

Intel says radiation testing for total ionizing dose, single-event latch-up and other single-event effects remains in progress. The processor will be manufactured in the United States. Intel currently plans to make Starfire samples available in the third quarter of 2026, although the company notes that the listed specifications remain subject to change.
