Nintendo reportedly considers Switch 2 OLED for 2028, Samsung may supply the panel
Nintendo is reportedly evaluating an OLED version of the Switch 2. The project has not received final approval and remains under internal review, according to a report from ZDNet Korea.
Nintendo may begin development near the end of 2026 if it decides to proceed. Industry sources expect mass production to begin in late 2027 or early 2028. This schedule suggests that retail availability would be unlikely before 2028.
OLED model would retain the current 1080p resolution
The report mentions a rigid OLED panel with a 1920×1080 resolution. This would be an upgrade from the 1280×720 OLED panel used in the original Switch OLED, but not from the standard Switch 2. Nintendo’s current model already has a 7.9-inch 1920×1080 LCD with HDR10 and VRR support at up to 120 Hz.
Switch 2 has a new revision with a Sharp panel, but it’ not OLED
Samsung Display reportedly wants to supply panels for the new model. The company also supplied the 7-inch OLED display used by the original Switch OLED. No panel size, refresh rate, HDR specification or other hardware changes have been confirmed for the proposed Switch 2 OLED.
Nintendo has reportedly not approved the product due to the cost difference between LCD and rigid OLED panels. Higher memory and storage costs are also affecting the calculation. The company would need to decide whether the added panel cost can be absorbed or passed to buyers.
The OLED project appears not related to the recent Switch 2 revision prepared for European battery regulations. We recently reported that the European version will use replaceable batteries, while another report linked Nintendo to a new LCD module from Sharp.
Worth adding that between the original Switch 1 and Switch 1 OLED, 4 years and 7 months had passed. An early 2028 release for Switch 2 OLED would mean 2 years and 7 months at the soonest.
