GPD WIN Max 3 Strix Halo handheld has detachable 97Wh battery

GPD WIN Max 3 combines 110W Strix Halo with a swappable 97Wh battery

GPD is preparing a new WIN Max system based on AMD’s Strix Halo platform. The WIN Max 3 combines a compact clamshell body with an integrated keyboard, touchpad and Xbox-style gaming controls. Early specifications list Ryzen AI Max+ 395 and Ryzen AI Max+ 388 processor options, both paired with the full Radeon 8060S integrated GPU. Pricing, release timing and final retail configurations have not been confirmed.

The Ryzen AI Max+ 395 has 16 Zen 5 cores, 32 threads and boost clocks up to 5.1 GHz. The Ryzen AI Max+ 388 reduces the CPU configuration to eight cores and 16 threads but retains the 40-compute-unit Radeon 8060S GPU. The graphics processor has 2,560 shaders, a maximum clock of 2.9 GHz and 32MB of MALL cache. Both APUs are listed with a configurable power range between 45W and 110W.

A 97Wh battery that does not have to stay attached

One of the more unusual parts of the design is the 97Wh removable battery. The 405-gram module attaches magnetically below the front of the computer, extending the depth of the system from 147mm to 180mm. Users can remove the battery, replace it with another unit or connect it through a magnetic extension cable. The last option allows the battery to sit beside the computer instead of adding its full weight to the handheld section.

The base WIN Max 3 measures 207×147×34mm and weighs 815 grams. Attaching the battery increases the total weight to 1,220 grams. GPD also lists a detachable dual-fan cooling module, which brings the weight to 985 grams without the battery. This module supplements the internal fan and four-heatpipe copper cooling system and is intended for sustained operation at up to 110W.

The system can run directly from its 180W DC adapter when the battery is removed or discharged. It also supports up to 100W charging through USB4 Power Delivery, although the DC input is required for full-power operation. A configurable charging limit can stop charging at values such as 80% when the machine spends long periods connected to external power.

165Hz AMOLED and up to 128GB of memory

The WIN Max 3 uses a 9.06-inch AMOLED touchscreen with a 2400×1504 resolution, 313 PPI density and selectable 60Hz, 120Hz, 144Hz and 165Hz modes. The listed panel uses a full RGB subpixel arrangement and supports HDR10, 10-bit color, active pens and ten-point touch. Standard brightness is listed at 650 nits, while HBM peak brightness reaches 1,050 nits. The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 6.

Memory configurations include 32GB, 64GB and 128GB of quad-channel LPDDR5X-8000 with up to 256GB/s of bandwidth. GPD claims that as much as 96GB can be allocated to the integrated GPU on the 128GB model. Storage expansion includes an M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 ×4 slot, an M.2 2230 PCIe 4.0 ×2 slot and a removable Mini SSD 1517 slot supporting capacities up to 2TB and transfer rates up to 1,600 MB/s.

GPD has not formally launched the system, so the specifications remain subject to change.
