NVIDIA RTX 50 hotspot sensor now works in HWMonitor

CPUID has released HWMonitor 1.65 with support for hotspot temperature monitoring on NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 series graphics cards. The reading is now available through a standard Windows application rather than NVIDIA’s internal diagnostic software.
NVIDIA removed RTX 50 hotspot access from the public interface used by monitoring applications. Early software builds displayed an invalid 255°C value before developers removed the field. GPU-Z developer W1zzard previously confirmed to VideoCardz that the value was no longer accessible through the public API.
Our previous report showed that the underlying temperature data had not been removed from the GPU. Repair technicians accessed it using NVIDIA MODS, an internal diagnostic package. Their RTX 5070 Ti reported only 67°C to 68°C through Windows tools, while MODS recorded a 107°C hotspot and thermal throttling.
RTX 5090 reports a 17°C temperature delta
Overclocker Madness has already tested the new HWMonitor release with a shunt-modded and water-cooled GeForce RTX 5090 Frostbite. The system reportedly drew more than 900W from the wall during a short 3DMark 11 loop. HWMonitor showed a peak hotspot temperature of around 68°C with a 17°C difference from the standard GPU temperature.

This suggests that the standard GPU reading was around 51°C. A 17°C difference appears reasonable for this water-cooled card under the reported load. By comparison, the faulty RTX 5070 Ti from our earlier report had a difference of almost 40°C, which led technicians to discover dry thermal material and poor contact between the GPU and cooler.

CPUID has not explained how HWMonitor accesses the RTX 50 hotspot value. The update, therefore, does not confirm that NVIDIA restored the original public API. It may use another undocumented monitoring path. Let’s hope that the support will be introduced to other tools like AIDA, HWINFO, and GPU-Z. We will keep you updated on this matter.
