NVIDIA RTX 50 GDDR7 temperatures unlocked

Just one day after we covered the discovery of per-module GDDR6 and GDDR6X temperature readings, developers already have an update. GDDR7 temperature data can now be accessed on GeForce RTX 50 graphics cards. This update is a follow up to work from Paulo Gomes’ team, MSI Afterburner and RTSS developer “Unwinder”, Overclock.net member asder00, HWiNFO creator Martin “Mumak” Malík and olealgoritme, who created the Linux code. Their research covered access to the memory registers and detection of clamshell memory configurations. This is what it takes when NVIDIA provides no documentation.






MSI Afterburner needs a plugin
Asder00 has added the findings to the Hotspot.dll plugin for MSI Afterburner. The plugin already exposed six Blackwell die temperature channels, the calculated hotspot, hotspot delta and memory junction temperature. Versions 1.4 and 1.5 also add readings from the thermal sensors used by GDDR7 memory.

Cards using clamshell memory require additional interpretation because memory packages are installed on both sides of the PCB. The GeForce RTX 5090 has 16 GDDR7 packages but exposes eight measurement points, with one value covering each paired group. A GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB test returned two GDDR7 readings, reaching 68°C and 64°C during the 3DMark Steel Nomad stress test.

The data does not currently show where each reported group is located on the PCB. However, it can reveal that one section of the memory is running warmer than the others. When combined with the GPU hotspot and hotspot delta, this can help identify uneven cooler pressure, poor thermal pad contact or thermal material that may need to be replaced. Reviewers may now also see if the memory on the other side is running hotter.
NVIDIA does not document these registers or provide supported access through its public monitoring interface. The company has not responded to our inquiry about restoring official hotspot access or documenting the thermal sensors available on Blackwell GPUs. Independent developers have now recovered hotspot, die-channel and GDDR7 temperature data that NVIDIA’s software does not expose to users. Let’s hope they found additional sensors.
