ONEXPLAYER charges $2,499 for the first Ryzen AI Max+ 388 handheld

ONEXPLAYER X2 Mini Pro reaches $3,229 with liquid cooling and 64GB memory

ONEXPLAYER has started taking direct orders for the X2 Mini Pro, its 8.8-inch handheld based on AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ 388 processor. The device is available for pre-order and is scheduled to begin shipping in August.

The base configuration costs $2,499 and includes 48GB of LPDDR5X memory and a 1TB SSD. Moving to 64GB and 1TB raises the price to $2,799, while the standard 64GB and 2TB version costs $2,999. ONEXPLAYER does not offer a 32GB or 512GB configuration.

Liquid-cooled models start at $2,579 without the external Frost Bay cooler. Adding the cooler raises the 48GB and 1TB configuration to $2,729. The highest-priced package combines 64GB of memory, a 2TB SSD and Frost Bay for $3,229.

The Ryzen AI Max+ 388 is arguably the most suitable Strix Halo configuration for gaming systems. It has eight Zen 5 cores and 16 threads, but retains the full Radeon 8060S integrated GPU with 40 RDNA 3.5 Compute Units. The GPU operates at up to 2.9 GHz and uses the same 256-bit memory interface as higher-core-count Strix Halo processors.

When AMD announced this processor in January, we described it as a better fit for handhelds than the 16-core Ryzen AI Max+ 395. Most games do not require 16 CPU cores, while keeping the complete graphics configuration avoids the 32-CU limitation of the Ryzen AI Max 385. The reduced CPU configuration was also expected to enable less expensive products.

The X2 Mini Pro does not deliver that lower entry price. It has a 1920×1200 OLED display with a 30 to 144 Hz variable refresh rate, detachable controllers, a removable 85Wh battery and two SSD interfaces. Air cooling supports up to 80W sustained power, while Frost Bay raises this to 120W.

The system should offer 16GB and 24GB configurations. However, ONEXPLAYER is clearly not targeting the lower end of the market and appears to be using higher memory capacities to increase margins, an unfortunte common practice among boutique handheld brands.
