Samsung confirms 1,600-nit laptop OLED panels for Lenovo, ASUS, Dell and MSI

Samsung tandem OLED laptop panels reach True Black 1400 certification

Samsung Display has started full-scale supply of its new tandem OLED panels for laptops. The panels support VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400 and can reach up to 1,600 nits at the panel level. Lenovo has already received certification for the first laptop using the technology, while ASUS, Dell Technologies and MSI are preparing their own products.

VESA introduced DisplayHDR True Black 1400 on July 8 as its highest certification tier for emissive displays. Certified products must achieve at least 1,400 nits of peak brightness, 700 nits across the full screen and black levels of 0.0005 nits or lower. The peak requirement is 40% higher than the previous True Black 1000 tier.

Samsung says its laptop panel reaches 1,600 nits, compared with around 1,100 nits for a conventional single-stack OLED panel. The Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition Gen 11 received True Black 1400 certification on July 8. Lenovo offers the system with an optional 16-inch 3.2K PureSight Pro tandem OLED display rated at 1,600 nits.

The panel stacks two organic emissive layers instead of using one. Both layers produce light together, allowing the display to increase brightness without placing the entire electrical load on one layer. Samsung claims the design provides more than twice the lifespan of a single-stack OLED panel under typical laptop brightness settings.

Samsung has also introduced new organic materials intended to improve light-emitting efficiency and stability. The company has not provided power-consumption figures or detailed specifications for each panel size.

ASUS, Dell Technologies and MSI are expected to introduce laptops supporting True Black 1400 during the second half of 2026 and through 2027. Samsung has not named the upcoming systems.
