GeForce RTX card from HP OMEN desktop shows unusual melting issue

A PC owner has shown an HP GeForce RTX graphics card with visible heat damage around the RGB section on its backplate. The material surrounding the rectangular illuminated area appears to have softened and deformed.

We could not identify the exact GPU model from the available images. The cooler and backplate resemble HP OEM designs used in OMEN gaming desktops, most likely from the GeForce RTX 40 series. It may be an RTX 4070 or RTX 4080-class card.

The rectangle near the rear of the card also appears to be an illuminated OMEN logo. HP OEM GeForce RTX cards are regularly removed from prebuilt systems and resold separately. You can easily find RTX 30, 40 and even 50 models on sale.

According to the owner, the case fans were not running. The lack of airflow may have raised the temperature inside the system and contributed to the damage. However, it does not fully explain why the melting appears concentrated around the RGB module.

LED lighting normally consumes little power and should not produce enough heat to melt a GPU backplate. The affected area must have reached an unusually high temperature. Possible causes include heat transferred from a nearby component, a fault in the lighting assembly or contact between the plastic section and a hot part of the card.

Interestingly, user says that the LED still works.
