Earlier this week was an exciting look at Intel Xe3 graphics performance gains on Linux 7.2 with Intel Core Ultra Series 3 "Panther Lake" hardware. On the other side of the table, with AMD hardware on this forthcoming kernel an area to be excited about are some I/O improvements at least for 5th Gen EPYC with speedy PCIe Gen5 NVMe SSD storage.
I continue trying out the Linux 7.2 development kernel on more systems and overall in good success. Linux 7.2 is working its way toward a stable release in the second half of August and brings with its many new features and changes . Linux 7.2 is all the more important with being the default kernel for the likes of Ubuntu 26.10.
My latest Linux 7.2 tests to share are from benchmarking Linux 7.1 stable against a recent Linux 7.2 Git snapshot with the same Kconfig on an AMD EPYC 9455P 48-core server.
This AMD EPYC 9455P server was built off the Supermicro H13SSL-N platform and for storage was a single SAMSUNG PM1743 MZWLO3T8HCLS-00A07 PCIe 5.0 NVMe solid state drive. This EPYC 9455P server was running with 12 x 64GB DDR5-6000 memory and running Ubuntu 26.04 as the base operating system with the mentioned Linux 7.1/7.2 kernels being compared.
