Intel 14A Node Goes Into Risk Production in 2H 2027, Volume Production in 2028

Intel reported one of its largest quarterly growth results last night, with Q2 2026 revenue reaching $16.1 billion and generating strong cash flow. However, a key highlight from the company's earnings call was the discussion about the 14A node and its production schedule. According to Intel's CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, "With encouraging progress from external customers and increased demand for our internal products, we remain on track for 14A risk production for our internal products in the second half of 2027. We decided in Q2 to fully commit to a high-volume ramp in 2028." This is a full year ahead of previous expectations, positioning Intel to deliver its leading-edge node for both internal use and external customers interested in Intel's manufacturing and advanced packaging.

We previously reported that the defect rate for Intel's 14A node is currently at D0=0.5, indicating that defects in production are occurring at a rate of only 0.5. This reflects a limited amount of purely non-functional silicon produced during the complex semiconductor manufacturing process. However, Intel is still working on optimizations to reduce the defect rate to D0=0.1, which would boost yields to 80-90% without issues.
