Unsold GTA VI physical copies in Japan will become unusable after 6 months

Rockstar Games has confirmed that the PlayStation download code included with ‘physical’ copies of Grand Theft Auto VI in Japan will expire 170 days after the game launches. The restriction, highlighted by Genki_JPN, only applies to Japanese product codes.
GTA VI launches on November 19, 2026, which Rockstar also lists as the code issuance date. This places the expiration date on May 8, 2027. A customer buying an unopened retail copy after this date could receive a code that can no longer be redeemed.
Japanese PlayStation account required
The Japanese code must also be redeemed using a PlayStation account registered in Japan. Rockstar recommends buying the game from a retailer located in the same country as the platform account to avoid activation problems.
In Japan the Grand Theft Auto VI physical version download code in the box will expire after 170 days from release day due to regional regulations.
This is a Japan only issue but it’s not a good sign for the future of code in a box releases on PlayStation in Japan imo.… pic.twitter.com/l7VldFl0C6

A boxed copy from Japan cannot simply be activated using a PlayStation account from Europe, North America or another Asian market. Xbox download codes are not region-locked, according to Rockstar.
But why?
Rockstar says the 170-day limit exists due to regional regulations, but it does not name the law involved. Japan’s Financial Services Agency states that prepaid payment instruments with a validity period of no more than six months are outside its prepaid instrument regulations. The 170-day window falls below that six-month threshold. This suggests the deadline may allow the code to remain outside those regulatory requirements, rather than Japanese law directly requiring game codes to expire.
While this has little to do with PlayStation moving away from new physical releases in 2028, it shows another problem Japanese players may face as more games switch from discs to download codes.
The GTA VI code-in-box release applies to both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. However, the 170-day expiry date and regional account restriction only affect the Japanese PlayStation version.
