GeForce RTX 3090 and RTX 3050 split rendering and frame generation for 4K 144 FPS

A PC builder has paired a GeForce RTX 3090 with a GeForce RTX 3050 6GB in a dual-GPU system using Lossless Scaling. The RTX 3090 renders the game, while the RTX 3050 handles frame generation.
Reddit user quziwuzzi reports locking the native frame rate to 71 FPS and generating enough intermediate frames to reach 144 FPS at 4K HDR. This matches the maximum refresh rate of the connected 42-inch LG C4 OLED television.
The two GPUs perform different tasks
Frame generation consumes GPU resources. Running Lossless Scaling on the same GPU as the game can lower the native frame rate because both workloads compete for processing time. The second card avoids this conflict. The RTX 3090 renders the real frames and transfers them over PCIe to the RTX 3050, which generates intermediate frames and sends the completed output to the display. This is not SLI, and the two GPUs do not combine their rendering performance or memory.
© quziwuzzi The monitor is connected directly to the RTX 3050 because it handles the final output. Connecting it to the RTX 3090 would require the processed image to travel back to the main GPU after frame generation, adding PCIe traffic and latency.
The system uses an ASUS ProArt X870E-Creator WiFi motherboard with both graphics cards operating through PCIe 4.0 x8 connections. High PCIe bandwidth is required because completed frames must be transferred between the two GPUs, including 4K HDR data.
The reported 144 FPS includes generated frames
The RTX 3090 does not render 144 native frames each second. The user caps the game at 71 FPS before applying Lossless Scaling in X2, X3 or adaptive frame generation modes. Input response therefore remains closer to the original 71 FPS performance rather than native 144 FPS.
The user later confirmed using a 60 to 70 percent flow-scale setting and said the RTX 3050 was purchased used for €80. However, the post does not include the tested games.
And why would the user go through all this effort? Well, it’s pretty simple: NVIDIA does not officially support Frame Generation on RTX 30 series.
