Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro reportedly adds AI Frame Fusion with frame generation

Qualcomm is reportedly adding dedicated matrix processing hardware to the GPU inside its next flagship mobile processor. The hardware will support a new gaming feature called AI Frame Fusion , which combines AI-assisted upscaling with frame generation.

According to internal graphics documentation reviewed by Notebookcheck, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, known as SM8975, uses an Adreno 850 GPU with two Matrix ALU blocks. These units accelerate matrix multiplication and convolution operations commonly used by AI models.

The Matrix ALUs sit inside the GPU shader processor rather than the Hexagon NPU. This allows them to work directly with rendering data and the GPU’s on-chip graphics memory, known as GMEM.

AI Frame Fusion supports two rendering modes

The first AI Frame Fusion mode provides super-resolution upscaling. It combines motion vectors, depth information, a low-resolution color buffer and the previously rendered image to produce a 1080p or 1440p output.

The second mode generates an intermediate frame using motion-vector data and optical-flow reprojection. It analyzes the current and previous rendered images before inserting a new frame between them. Qualcomm reportedly aims to increase perceived frame rates without requiring a proportional increase in GPU power consumption.

Qualcomm has not disclosed image quality presets, supported base resolutions or the performance cost of either mode. It is also unclear whether developers must integrate AI Frame Fusion individually or whether Qualcomm can enable it through its graphics driver.

Standard Snapdragon chip may lack Matrix ALUs

The feature reportedly remains exclusive to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro. The standard SM8950 processor is expected to use an Adreno 845 GPU without the two Matrix ALU blocks.

The Adreno 845 reportedly also receives 12MB of GMEM, compared with 18MB on the Adreno 850. This would give the Pro processor additional graphics hardware and a larger on-chip memory pool rather than only higher GPU clock speeds.

Qualcomm has not confirmed the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series or AI Frame Fusion. The company will hold Snapdragon Summit 2026 in Maui from September 22 to September 24, when it is expected to introduce its next mobile platforms.
