Intel Core 2 Duo launched 20 years ago and restored Intel’s performance lead
© Intel Intel launched its first Core 2 Duo processors on July 27, 2006, introducing the Conroe architecture to desktop PCs. The new family replaced Intel’s NetBurst-based Pentium processors and restored the company’s performance lead over AMD.
The desktop lineup included the Core 2 Duo E6300, E6400, E6600 and E6700. Intel also released the Core 2 Extreme X6800, which operated at 2.93 GHz and included 4MB of shared L2 cache. The processors were manufactured using Intel’s 65nm process and contained 291 million transistors.
Conroe replaced NetBurst
Core 2 Duo shifted Intel’s focus away from the high clock speeds used by Pentium 4 processors. Conroe used a shorter execution pipeline, higher instructions per clock performance, improved branch prediction and a shared cache accessible by both CPU cores.
© Intel Intel claimed that the processors delivered up to 40% more performance while consuming over 40% less power than its previous processors. The entry-level E6300 operated at only 1.86 GHz but could outperform some Pentium Extreme Edition models running at much higher frequencies.
The launch also ended AMD’s performance lead established by the Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 X2 families. Core 2 Duo quickly became the reference platform for gaming and high-performance desktop systems, while AMD needed several CPU generations to regain a comparable position.
Core 2 architecture continued with quad-core CPUs
Intel expanded the architecture with the Core 2 Quad family in early 2007. These processors combined two dual-core dies in one package, giving desktop systems access to four CPU cores without requiring a new architecture.
Core 2 later formed the basis for several Intel processor generations before the company introduced Nehalem in 2008. Intel maintained its desktop performance lead through most of the following decade, until AMD returned with Ryzen and improved its position further with the Zen 2-based Ryzen 3000 series.
