Following yesterday's excellent quarterly earnings report , CAPCOM shares are literally skyrocketing on the stock market at nearly +20% , with a single share now valued at ¥4,229.00 ($25.86), not too far from the all-time record of ¥4,865.00 set right after the launch of Resident Evil 4 remake in 2023 .
The main driver was apparently the overall game sales number registered in Q1: 23.81 million units , an outstanding +68% over last year's 14.16 million units sold in the same quarter. Hideki Yasuda, an analyst at Toyo Research Advice Co, told Bloomberg :
The sales number is just astonishing because I’ve never seen a number above 20 million, even during the busiest year-end holiday season. Hats off to Capcom for achieving this in what is usually a very slow quarter.
Bloomberg also reports that CAPCOM's Corporate Officer Yoshikazu Shimauchi praised PRAGMATA 's momentum, which exceeded the company's internal expectations. The executive reckoned that pre-release marketing and the appeal of Diana, the child-like android character that aids the playable character Hugh, helped boost sales of the sci-fi action-adventure game. Additionally, Shimauchi-san added that the likelihood of a PRAGMATA sequel is high .
This is the first time CAPCOM has said anything about it. Then again, it's not at all surprising: selling 2.5 million units for a brand new intellectual property in the span of a few months is far from easy. Of course, those players who actually finished the game must wonder how the sequel will be structured, given what happens at the end of PRAGMATA.
CAPCOM investors certainly hope the new sci-fi IP will turn into yet another major pillar for the Japanese publisher, following in the footsteps of Monster Hunter, Resident Evil, and even Devil May Cry, whose fifth mainline installment is showing an impressively long tail. Weirdly enough, 2025 was the most successful year in terms of yearly sales (2.7 million) for Devil May Cry 5, outselling 2019 and 2023. Now, DMC 5 has surpassed 14 million units sold, thanks to the Switch 2 release and the popular Netflix animated series.
