Today marks the official theatrical debut of Spider-Man: Brand New Day , the fourth film in the MCU Spider-Man series starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker, in much of Europe plus China and Brazil (US theaters are getting it on July 31). As part of the final press interviews, IGN spoke with Holland himself on the red carpet, and the actor revealed that a lot of the movie's fight scenes were heavily inspired by Insomniac Games' Marvel's Spider-Man 2 .
A lot of the action, a lot of the finishing moves were inspired by it. I was actually playing the game last night. I couldn’t sleep last night, I was so excited about today. I was trying to figure out what I was gonna do, and I was like, ‘I’ll just throw the game on and have some fun.’ For me, a lot of those finishing moves, a lot of our stuff was influenced by that stuff.
Holland wasn't the only one with Spider-Man 2 in mind, apparently. Movie director Destin Daniel Cretton shared that many of the stunt performers and action designers drew from the same inspiration when designing the fight scenes in the film.
A lot of the action designers and stunt people we had were huge gamers. They were able to experience things in those games that made them excited, and they would just screengrab the moves they really liked and bring them into the writers’ room and show it to me. And then we’d be like, ‘Yeah, that’s sick. Let’s try to figure out how to do that for real.'
That's certainly a great endorsement for the latest Insomniac game dedicated to Marvel's friendly neighborhood superhero. Spider-Man 2 launched in October 2023 to unanimous praise ( including mine ), though its commercial success of more than sixteen million units sold as of last November was a bit overshadowed by the leak that the game cost over $300 million to make , three times as much as the predecessor. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 just received a new patch to celebrate the launch of Spider-Man: Brand New Day; you can read more about that here .
As for Insomniac, they're about to launch Marvel's Wolverine , another third-person action/adventure game featuring a Marvel superhero. This one will be a linear globetrotting adventure rather than an open-world game set in a single location, though. Also, despite being set in the same universe, the developers have ruled out a crossover with Spider-Man .
