MSI High-Efficiency Mode brings standard DDR5-6000 close to EXPO ULL

MSI BIOS setting cuts DDR5-6000 latency from 79.4ns to 71.6ns

MSI says its High-Efficiency Mode can bring standard AMD EXPO memory close to the latency offered by EXPO Ultra Low Latency kits. The motherboard BIOS feature automatically tightens selected memory timings without requiring users to tune each value manually.

AMD EXPO Ultra Low Latency, also known as EXPO ULL, uses more aggressive memory subtimings than a standard EXPO profile. Compatible MSI motherboards identify supported memory kits inside Click BIOS X and display a ULL label next to the relevant profile.

Standard DDR5-6000 reaches 71.6ns

MSI tested two 32GB DDR5-6000 kits with CL30 primary timings. The standard kit recorded 79.4ns latency with High-Efficiency Mode disabled. Enabling the Tightest preset reduced this result to 71.6ns.

The EXPO ULL kit recorded 71.4ns using its default profile. High-Efficiency Mode reduced this result by only 0.3ns to 71.1ns. According to MSI’s testing, the setting provides a larger improvement when used with standard EXPO memory.

High-Efficiency Mode includes four presets called Tightest, Tighter, Balance and Relax. Each option applies a different level of memory timing optimization. Tightest uses the most aggressive settings, while Relax applies more conservative values.

Stability is not guaranteed

MSI conducted the tests using a Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor, an MSI B850MPOWER motherboard and two G.SKILL 2x16GB memory kits. The system also used a GeForce RTX 5090 and Windows 11 25H2.

The company warns that tighter memory timings can cause system instability. Results will also depend on the processor, motherboard, BIOS version and memory kit. MSI recommends switching to a less aggressive preset when the system encounters errors or crashes.
