Memory Makers Push DDR5 MRDIMM Speeds To 16,000 MT/s, Closing The Gap On The Final 17,600 MT/s Target, As AMD Among The First To Utilize 3rd Gen MRDIMMs

DDR5 MRDIMMs are seeing increased adoption due to surging compute demand as memory makers accelerate their roadmaps.

The server and data center segment is quickly moving to the MRDIMM standards, which offer much higher bandwidth capabilities than standard RDIMMs. The first generation of MRDIMMs has already been rolled out, offering north of 8000 MT/s speeds.

Intel will be among the first to offer 8800 MT/s MRDIMM support on its Xeon 6 platforms . AMD, on the other hand, is pushing for up to 12,800 MT/s MRDIMM support. These 2nd Gen MRDIMM RAMs are already in full production, with companies like Innodisk already listing their 12,800 MT/s speeds enabled by MRCD and MDB technologies. These DIMMs provide a 60% bandwidth uplift over DDR5-8000 RDIMM while retaining the same compact design and compatibility with DDR5 slots.

On the other hand, Micron has listed its own 2nd Gen MRDIMM solution with up to 14,400 MT/s speeds , an 80% uplift over DDR5-8000 RDIMMs. The memory will feature CL58 timings, operate at 1.1V, and utilize 24 Gb ICs for 96 GB capacities. Other capacities and denser configurations will also be available.

Meanwhile, solution providers such as Renesas have announced their Gen 3 MRDIMM chipset , which boosts DDR5 MRDIMM capabilities to 16,000 MT/s. This boosts the bandwidth by up to 25% over the 2nd Gen MRDIMM. Renesas states that the 3rd Gen MRDIMM solutions are not only designed with performance in mind, but also feature better system-level power efficiency.

Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723), a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, today announced its third-generation (Gen 3) DDR5 Multiplexed Rank Dual In-Line Memory Module (MRDIMM) chipset solutions, delivering DDR5 server-class MRDIMM speeds up to 16,000 mega transfers per second (MT/s). The new solutions are designed to address the growing demand for higher memory bandwidth driven by artificial intelligence (AI) data centers, cloud infrastructure and accelerated compute workloads.

Among the list of partners, AMD will be a key customer of 3rd Gen MRDIMMs. The company has already outlined its Zen 6 Venice and Verano lineups with DDR5-12800 MRDIMMs , so we expect future Florence "Zen 7" lineups to utilize these 3rd Gen modules in a significant way.

Renesas has announced that its MRDIMM Gen 3 MRCD (RRG5013x) and MDB (RRG5103x) are already being sampled to select customers, and production availability is expected in 2H 2027.

Once again, MRDIMMs will play a crucial role in the AI and HPC segment moving forward, as it offers faster performance, bandwidth, and higher efficiency while retaining the same DDR5 RAM standards, giving existing platforms and deployments a boost without moving to future DDR6 standards .
