At just 4.1mm in thickness when completely unfolded, Samsung has achieved a near-impossible feat with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and for a device that’s 27 percent thinner than the iPhone Air, there’s one huge compromise that the company made, which will adversely affect its thermals. At the same time, U.S. consumers have to pay $2,099.99, and that, too, for the base storage.

An image circulating on Reddit that was posted by “Good-Breadfruit3577” shows that someone has already exposed the guts of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, revealing the kind of cooling Samsung resorted to in order to help keep the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and other components tamed when under load. Like the Galaxy Z Fold 7, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra lacks any vapor chamber and relies on a graphite sheet to prevent overheating, though we doubt this approach will be helpful.

We’ve already reported that even with a vapor chamber and an active cooling fan, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 still manages to enter thermal throttle territory on smartphones like the REDMAGIC 11 Pro when pushed hard. On the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, the SoC won’t just be dealing with a lack of robust cooling, but also a confined chassis to properly dissipate heat. From a price perspective alone, Samsung should have gone the extra mile to incorporate a vapor chamber to let the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 breathe properly.

In harsher climates where there’s increased humidity, even performing basic tasks like capturing images or video could lead to thermal throttling, while unfolding the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra to play AAA games through emulation will deliver a subpar experience because the severe throttling will cause frame rates to dip frequently. However, this is only a minor scenario where the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will operate below expectations.

In other tasks like video streaming, we’re sure the device will be chugging along nicely. Whether it was the sheer thinness of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra or the increased memory costs that forced Samsung to make such a compromise, the high price was already going to be a major barrier to upgrading for thousands of consumers. Now, Samsung can add another reason to that list.
