The team Red has started laying the groundwork for the RDNA 5 lineup on Linux by introducing initial support for DCN6.
AMD has taken one more step toward enabling support for its next-generation RDNA architecture on Linux. A new batch of AMDGPU patches has been submitted to the Linux Kernel mailing list and has begun laying the foundation for Display Core Next 6, aka DCN6, which is the display engine expected to power the RDNA 5 graphics chips .

These patches are part of AMD's regular development work for the open-source Linux graphics stack, and while they do not reveal specific GPU products, the code links the DCN6 to the GFX13 graphics engine. This GFX13 graphics engine corresponds to the upcoming AMD RDNA 5 architecture , as we have already seen last year, and marks one of the earliest references to AMD's next-gen GPUs within the Linux ecosystem.

The patch introduces the basic framework required for DCN6 support, which is a necessary infrastructure before AMD gradually adds more hardware-specific features and optimizations in future updates. Display Core Next is AMD's display engine, which is responsible for handling the display output and monitor connectivity. Each new GPU generation arrives with a new DCN version, and therefore, DCN6 is just another indication of RDNA 5 hardware development.
The DCN67 patches do not reveal any performance improvements or display capabilities, but they highlight AMD's groundwork for software ecosystem development. More patches should arrive in the coming months, which are expected to reveal display functionality, power management, and multimedia support on RDNA 5.
