Valve’s Lepton Android container is now publicly available on Steam
Valve has publicly released Lepton through Steam, giving users access to one of the main compatibility components developed for Steam Frame. FEX, the x86-to-ARM translation tool used by the headset, was released at almost the same time.
The Lepton is classified as a free Linux service tool rather than a game or consumer application. Its public installation is around 1.07 GiB, while Valve also maintains previous and bleeding-edge branches.
Lepton runs Android games inside containers
Valve describes Lepton as an Android compatibility layer for Linux. It runs Android software inside a container, which allows the host Linux system and Android environment to share hardware resources with limited overhead.
This differs from FEX, which translates 32-bit and 64-bit x86 instructions to ARM64. Steam Frame combines both systems with Proton. Lepton handles Android games, FEX handles x86 code, and Proton provides Windows compatibility. The headset itself uses a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 ARM64 processor running an Arch-based version of SteamOS.
© SteamDB Steam developers can now create an Android depot containing an APK and optional OBB data. They can select Android as a supported operating system and configure the APK as the Steam launch executable. Steam Cloud also supports save data stored inside the Android external data directory.

Steam Frame release window is getting shorter
Lepton does not currently have a conventional Steam store page. Opening its store link redirects to the main Steam storefront because it operates as a background service component. Its public release is still one of the clearest signs that Valve is preparing the software stack required for Steam Frame owners.
The update has restarted the Steam Frame launch countdown among hardware trackers. Valve has only confirmed that Steam Frame will ship during summer 2026. The company has not announced its price, reservation date or exact release day. With August already underway, the remaining launch window now covers the closing weeks of summer.
