Xbox 360 catalog could return in 2027 under leaked backward compatibility roadmap

An alleged Microsoft roadmap sent to publishers has revealed the planned schedule for Xbox Disc to Digital and the expanded backward compatibility program. The images were shared by eXtas1s. Microsoft has not confirmed the document or its dates.

The roadmap lists July 2026 as the public beta period for Disc to Digital and the early release of original Xbox games on PC. The second part has already happened. Microsoft launched four original Xbox games on PC and handhelds on July 22, including BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge and Fuzion Frenzy.

Disc to Digital reportedly launches in August

According to the leaked schedule, Disc to Digital will become generally available to Xbox One and Xbox Series X owners in August. Microsoft employees were previously reported to be testing the feature under references to “Disc2Digital” found in the Xbox PC application.

The system reportedly grants a digital entitlement after a compatible Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc is inserted into a console. The license remains linked to that specific disc. Selling or lending the disc would therefore transfer the entitlement to its new user rather than create a permanent digital copy for the original owner.

The leaked publisher message claims that Xbox will handle engineering, certification and support. Publishers would retain control over rights, pricing and branding while deciding whether to participate.

Xbox 360 catalog reportedly follows in 2027

The roadmap lists October 2026 as the full launch of Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC. Microsoft currently describes the program as an early release, so October may mark a wider catalog rollout beyond the four available games. Existing digital licenses for those games already carry over from console to PC through Xbox Play Anywhere.

Xbox 360 games would reportedly follow gradually between 2027 and 2028 across “next-gen Xbox devices.” The wording does not specifically confirm Xbox 360 games for PC. It may refer to future Xbox hardware, PC handhelds or multiple Xbox platforms, but the document does not define the supported devices.
