MSI’s 27-inch OLED Monitor Ditches Metal-Mask Manufacturing For Inkjet Printing, Promising Sharper Text And Higher Yields

The monitor uses an inkjet-printed OLED panel, which has been supplied by TCL CSOT for better features.

Conventional OLED monitors are usually manufactured using a process called Fine Metal Mask or FMM evaporation. These metal masks can sag or deform on larger displays, which basically reduces the manufacturing yield and increases the costs. MSI, on the other hand, went with Inkjet printing, which uses a completely different approach.

The company has today introduced what it calls the World's first 27-inch 4K 120 Hz Inkjet-Printed OLED monitor. The technology involves printing tiny droplets of OLED material directly onto the glass substrate. This is done on a microscopic level and usually results in lower manufacturing costs, better yields, and true RGB subpixel layout.

This usually results in sharper text and less color fringing, which is one of the monitor's biggest advantages. As far as the specifications are concerned, the MSI PRO MAX OLED 271UPJW12 isn't delivering any leading features or competing with the flagship OLED offerings. However, it still offers decent specs suited well for the mid-range segment.

This includes a 27-inch panel that boasts 4K resolution. The monitor is capped at a 120 Hz refresh rate, which is fine for competitive gaming, but the display properties make it a suitable candidate for professional work. It supports the HDR True Black 500 standard, can deliver up to 1000 nits of peak brightness, and delivers Delta E < 2 factory calibration for superior color accuracy.

The monitor is excellent for productivity through deploying a KVM switch that allows controlling two devices using a single set of peripherals. MSI says that the PRO MAX 271UPJW12 is also equipped with an advanced anti-glare coating that upgrades its surface hardness from 2H to 3H for up to 2.5x better scratch resistance, increasing its durability.

MSI hasn't disclosed any details on its pricing and availability yet.
