Thanks to the Highwind airship redefining the trilogy's scale , allowing Cloud and his companions to travel quickly throughout the game's big map, Final Fantasy VII Revelation from Square Enix is set to be a significant step up over Final Fantasy VII Rebirth . While the combat system isn't set to change a whole lot, as director Naoki Hamaguchi believes it has been perfected in the second entry in the trilogy , the conclusion of the saga will still spice things up with the FITS system , bringing a job system for the first time into the Final Fantasy VII universe.
Following the game's reveal during Summer Game Fest , Hamaguchi-san said that there would only be 4 FITS per character, and it sadly wasn't just a translation error, as he confirmed the small number of jobs again. However, this isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Speaking with GamesRadar+ during last week's Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest in Berlin, Hamaguchi-san said that making the game's FITS reminded him of how tough modern game development is. “It did make me realize all over again how hard it is to develop games these days. When you look at some of the early Final Fantasy games that have job systems, you could put a lot in there,” Hamaguchi says. “These days, wanting to have 20 or 30 jobs isn't really feasible for a standalone game,” Hamaguchi continues via a translator. In fact, it's “just insanely difficult” unless you're an “ongoing title” that's adding content “bit by bit.”
Despite the low number of FITS , the job system will add a lot to the Final Fantasy VII Revelation experience. “The FITS system has four different outfits for each character, and each of those is quite a defined role. In the end, that has added quite a lot of breadth of strategy for players to engage with, so I think it has resulted in a really good addition to the battle system,” Hamaguchi- san explained. “Even though we only have four FITS, we have a lot of characters, so it was quite a lot of work.”
Although Hamaguchi-san reassured all Final Fantasy VII Revelation fans that the FITS system will still provide tons of customization possibilities , I have to admit I was initially disappointed in knowing it was limited to 4 FITS per character. However, as I am playing through Final Fantasy VII Rebirth again with some mods that make me engage more with the combat mechanics such as the Logarithmic Enemy HP mod and a Cheat Engine table that drops Stagger buildup to 0.2% its regular value, I began to realize how adding more than 4 FITS with unique combat options could make the entire experience overwhelming.
With enemies having more HP and more Stagger resistance , I am forced to use every tool in the character arsenal. And in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth , it's already a lot of tools: regular attacks, character unique specials like Cloud's Punisher Mode and Barret's Overcharge , weapon skills (including the installs that change the properties of attacks significantly as with Tifa's Overpower and Cloud's Prime Mode ), magic , Synergy Skills , Synergy Attacks , and Limit Breaks .
Adding much more to the pot would have been truly overwhelming for most players. Despite this being my third playthrough, I am still making some discoveries, such as making Cloud a ranged fighter thanks to his Synergy Skills with Barret / Red XIII and Aerith / Yuffie , or using Cloud's final dodge attack shockwave to pin a pressured enemy in place for the Power Cleave Synergy Skill . Adding a lot more to this would probably have made much of it underutilized, not to mention the balancing nightmare it could have been.
As Naoki Hamaguchi and the rest of the development team at Square Enix have proved to be more than capable in delivering memorable and fun experiences with Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth , I have no doubt that they will deliver again with Final Fantasy VII Revelation . Hopefully, it won't take much longer to see the remaining FITS , and how they will shake up one of the best combat systems ever seen in a role-playing game when the game launches in Spring 2027 (possibly in February or March 2027 )
