The Last of Us Part II Multiplayer Mod Hits 4v4 Matches as One Modder Revives What Naughty Dog Canceled

Modder Speclizer has revealed that the ambitious The Last of Us Part II Multiplayer Mod project now supports up to 4v4 matches . To celebrate the project's milestone, there's also a lot of new footage on YouTube, both from Speclizer and the others who participated in the playtest.

The modder also successfully implemented a feature that was available in Factions , the official multiplayer mode of The Last of Us :

Just implemented a voice system into the TLOU 2 Multiplayer mod that picks a random voice line from your team's voice line list and broadcasts it to all players when you do an action like marking or killing a player. Just like how it was in Factions.

Speclizer has been modding The Last of Us Part II since 2025. At first, the modder tried to restore the ' Hold Up ' feature that developer Naughty Dog cut from the final version of the game.

However, the modder's interest quickly shifted to an even loftier goal: adding multiplayer to a game that didn't have it. Naughty Dog famously decided not to ship any multiplayer mode with The Last of Us Part II because they were making The Last of Us Online , a long-gestating standalone game that was eventually canceled in late 2023 after the studio realized it would have to support the game for years if successful.

The Factions mode quietly had a lot of fans, though, and that's the audience Speclizer is targeting with The Last of Us Part II multiplayer mod. The PC port of the first installment also lacked multiplayer , so this will be a first for PC fans.

There's no word from Speclizer on what exactly the state of the mod is, but based on the video evidence, everything seems to be working pretty well. It might not be much longer before it's considered ready for the wider public.
