Modder turns Steam Machine faceplate into a Steam Controller charging dock

Custom Steam Machine front panel also works as a standalone Controller dock

Steam Machine owners may eventually have more useful faceplate options than cosmetic panels. One modder has designed a replacement front cover that also serves as a charging station for the Steam Controller.

Redditor NefariousnessWhole25 said the concept was inspired by Valve’s e-ink faceplate demonstration. However, the display would not be readable from the user’s normal seating position, so the project moved in a different direction.

The charging puck sits inside the faceplate

The custom panel holds the Steam Controller charging puck directly on the front of the Steam Machine. Its USB cable can run around the system and connect to a rear port, keeping most of the wiring out of view.

The puck is secured through friction, a small lower lip and the connected USB-C cable. A 90-degree adapter prevents the cable from extending through the top of the panel. The Controller itself remains attached using the magnets inside the charging puck.

It can also work without the Steam Machine

The dock includes a detachable stand, allowing it to operate as a separate charging station. The stand can slide into the rear of the faceplate when it is not being used.

The model was created in Fusion using the official CAD files released by Valve. The current prototype was printed with Bambu Lab Matte Charcoal material. The creator has not yet released the design files or confirmed plans to sell the dock, although several users have already requested an STL or finished version.
