Sony warns PS5 buyers that new game discs end in January 2028
PS5 packaging now explains the disc cutoff.
New PlayStation 5 retail boxes are appearing with a large notice explaining that newly released PlayStation games will no longer be sold on disc from January 2028. The warning is printed in several languages and appears on packaging for the 1TB disc-based console.
The text states that new games will remain available through the PlayStation Store and from retailers in digital format. Discs for games released before January 2028 will continue to work on the console. The same wording now appears on Sony’s official PS5 product and purchasing pages.
Sony announced the end of physical production for new PlayStation games on July 1. The change covers games released from January 2028 onward, while existing physical releases and titles arriving before the deadline remain unaffected.

The PS5 disc drive will still support older games
The notice does not mean PS5 disc drives will stop working in 2028. Buyers will still be able to use physical PS4 and PS5 games released before the cutoff, including used copies and games already in their collections.
Adding the warning directly to PS5 packaging gives buyers less than two years of advance notice when purchasing the disc model. Retailers will still be able to sell new games after January 2028, but these products will contain digital licenses rather than playable discs.
Sony has not confirmed how the next PlayStation console will handle existing physical libraries. The packaging only confirms that current disc-based PS5 consoles will continue to support games released on disc before January 2028.
What gamers can see now is that Sony is moving ahead with the end of physical media, further cementing the decision it recently confirmed during an investor call . The company shows no indication that it plans to reverse or postpone the change.
