Monster Hunter Wilds Chases World’s 22 Million Units Record as CAPCOM Bets on Ascendance Expansion and Switch 2 Debut

After a strong hype-driven start, Monster Hunter Wilds sales slowed as fans complained about several issues, starting with the game's performance. CAPCOM has worked hard to remedy those, and the publisher still aims to eventually exceed the sales result of Monster Hunter World , which is still currently CAPCOM's best-selling game ever with 22.10 million units sold.

Here's the quote from the Q&A portion of the recent Q1 2027 earnings call:

Ongoing enhancements to the technical performance of Monster Hunter Wilds have led to sales for the game improving. We have also seen a response to the announcement of the upcoming massive expansion, Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, and related pricing measures. We plan to continue improving the game’s technical performance as we aim to drive its total unit sales beyond those of Monster Hunter: World over the medium to long term.

The game is already more than halfway there, having surpassed 11.40 million units sold to date, and CAPCOM has begun implementing various initiatives to get more people into the game. Just yesterday, they released a "Prologue" demo that features the opening hours of Monster Hunter Wilds playable in Offline Mode, with full access to character creation, all 14 weapon types, and story content up to the beginning of Chapter 1-3 “ To the Forest .” After playing the demo, fans can continue their journey in the Forbidden Lands by seamlessly transferring their save data to the full version on the same platform.

On that note, the publisher also announced a permanent price drop of the base game to $39.99 , which may well entice more players to jump in. Moreover, a Nintendo Switch 2 version is officially in development , opening up Monster Hunter Wilds to another audience.

Of course, a lot rides on the success of the Ascendance expansion , which is scheduled to launch next year. The expansion will introduce a brand-new region called the Skybound Eyrie , a chain of floating islands and ancient ruins that players navigate by riding updrafts and gliding between landmasses on their Seikret mounts. Combat is getting a major overhaul through the Boost Bracer , a new tool that adds fresh attacks, combos, and mobility options across all 14 weapon types.

Ascendance also brings back the series' traditional Master Rank difficulty tier, raising the challenge ceiling and unlocking higher-tier gear crafting. On the monster front, CAPCOM has confirmed the return of Elder Dragons Kushala Daora and Lao-Shan Lung , the latter not seen since Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate , alongside new aerial threats introduced specifically for the Skybound Eyrie.
