Sony Forces PSSR 2.0 On Every PS5 Pro Game, As New Beta Update Flips The Upscaler Toggle On By Default

The one feature that defines the PS5 Pro is the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR ) upscaler . While the first version of the AI-powered upscaling technology left something to be desired in games like the Silent Hill 2 remake , where the upscaler didn't work properly with Unreal Engine 5's light rendering, the enhanced PSSR 2.0 is elevating gaming on the system.

However, some games that haven't been updated still only support the first version of the upscaler, relying on the system's "Enhance PSSR Image Quality" toggle to improve image quality. Although this toggle will eventually be deprecated once future versions of the upscaler are released , for now, Sony wants to make the best use out it, to ensure that PS5 Pro users are using the latest version of PSSR in every supported game.

According to a report on the ResetERA forums , Sony started sending invites to test out a new PlayStation 5 System Software update. "The 'Enhance PSSR Image Quality' feature is now enabled by default. When you update your system software, this setting will be turned on automatically. When enabled, enhanced PSSR image quality will also be applied to games that support the previous version of PSSR, providing an even sharper and clearer visual experience," reads the accompanying email.

Besides improving system software performance and stability, and a few minor changes for the Turn Off Bluetooth feature for some regions, the new PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro beta system software update doesn't seem to introduce anything significant. However, as it is still a beta, there's a chance there are other undocumented features, or that more may creep in before the update's public release , the date of which has yet to be officially confirmed.
