Rockstar Games sets GTA VI Extended Look for August 27, but the Netflix Exclusive Changes the Usual Marketing Plan

Following increasingly loud rumors that Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) would finally get an extended look later this month, Rockstar Games has now confirmed that that will happen on Thursday, August 27 , three weeks from today.

The big surprise is that the extended look will premiere exclusively on Netflix at 3 PM Eastern Time, while Rockstar's YouTube channel and the official website will offer the same footage from 9 PM Eastern Time. It's yet another example of the big marketing campaign that Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick had said would begin in Summer 2026. Sure enough, here we are.

The first official marketing beat arrived on November 8, 2023 , when Rockstar announced that the debut trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto would be released in early December as part of the studio's 25th-anniversary celebrations. The announcement did not reveal the game’s title, setting, characters, or release date, allowing the trailer itself to serve as the project's formal unveiling.

The trailer confirmed the rumored return to Vice City , introduced Lucia as the game's central character alongside Jason , and expanded the setting to include the wider fictional state of Leonida . It also established an initial 2025 release window for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X versions of GTA VI.

Rockstar followed the trailer with a period of silence, broken by a release update on May 2, 2025 , when the developer revealed that GTA VI would miss its previously announced 2025 window and move to May 26, 2026 , saying the additional development time was needed to deliver the level of quality expected from the series. Just four days later, on May 6, 2025 , Rockstar released the second official trailer. This provided a substantially broader look at the game, and the studio also refreshed the game's official website with 70 screenshots and new descriptions of its characters and locations.

The next major change came on November 6, 2025 , when Rockstar delayed the game again, this time to November 19, 2026 . The studio once again commented that the additional months would allow it to finish the game with the polish players expect from a GTA title. Rockstar subsequently updated the release-date graphics for the existing trailers but did not release a third trailer or an extended gameplay presentation at that time.

That makes the newly announced August 27 extended look the first substantial new video presentation since Trailer 2, which was well over a year ago. Its unusual distribution plan, with a timed Netflix exclusive, gives the next marketing beat scale and structure unlike the game's previous trailer releases, signaling that Grand Theft Auto VI is really nearing the finish line , with the November 19 launch date already looming on the horizon.
